Network Inventory is a functionality that builds a repository of your
network.

There are many levels of inventory. It can be on the network level/
station level/business level

There are 2 approaches that can be used:
1. An automatic discovery tool that fills the inventory db.
2. A manual screen based mechanism that allows the users to fill
information about their site

The best solution is probably a combination of both.

The problem with many of the automatic discovery off the shelf
solutions are that their inventory is very specific, and it is
impossible or hard to tailor, and some times you need to define what
you want to collect. There are some good solutions in the market. A
costly one is from CA (spectrum and more). I found a few weeks ago, a
very flexible tool for automatic discovery of almost everything which
is digital in a company named www.jilroy.com. I am now playing with it
with the support from the company, and it has many capabilities,
however it requires some understanding in what you want.

So if you are looking for materials look at network discovery in CA,
HP,... and you can contact the support of Jilroy and as far as I can
see they will help you too if you have an implementation in mind.
